The three inputs a chart needs
Your birth date establishes the day's planetary positions. Your birthplace supplies coordinates and time-zone history. Your birth time determines the Ascendant, Midheaven, and house cusps.
If the birth time is unknown, many planetary signs can still be calculated, but the rising sign and houses may be unreliable. A responsible chart should make that uncertainty visible.
The Big Three

Beyond the Big Three
Mercury, Venus, and Mars describe thought, relating, and action. Jupiter and Saturn show growth and structure. The outer planets describe slower collective forces that become personal through houses and aspects.
Western and Vedic charts
Western astrology commonly uses the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology commonly uses a sidereal zodiac with an ayanamsha such as Lahiri. Because their reference points differ, the same birth data may produce different zodiac signs.
